What is Swellaway?

Swellaway is a concept developed by Design Futures (Sheffield University) and is funded by the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) as part of the Smart award. Following extensive ankle surgery, the development team found that swelling was principally treated by the topical application of a bag of frozen peas, whilst joint stiffness and pain (including arthritis) were principally managed using gel packs heated in the microwave or hot water bottles. Both treatments had a large number of drawbacks and so the idea for Swellaway was born for the human and pet-care markets.

Swellaway provides a single unit, which will deliver either heat or cold directly to the treatment area in a controlled, safe and comfortable manner. The cold or heat can be applied directly to the joint/part of the anatomy using flexible breathable material.
